Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a home to the only left 21 Uganda southern white Rhinos located approximately 180 kilometres and accessed by road Northern part of the prominent Capital City of Uganda- Kampala. The sanctuary spans an estimated distance of about 70 square kilometres neighboring the Nakitoma Village in the heart of Nakasongola District.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is an initiative manifested by the Uganda wildlife Authority and the Rhino Fund Uganda, the latter was formed in 1987. Previously some Rhinos had been introduced in the Entebbe Zoo originating from the Kenya Ranch, later, in 2004 to 2005 the southern white Rhino were fully settled in the Sanctuary that seemed to be a finest breeding ground to these Species.
The Ziwa Rhino southern white Rhinos stand averagely 1.8 metres tall, have a gestation period of 16 months and the young ones weigh 50 kilograms at birth, the new born babies keep increasing in size by at least adding a half kilogram on to their size until 2 years of Maturity.
Due to increasing public threats to the Ziwa Rhino’s and being a global threat worldwide, a team of approximately 80 park rangers from different government and non- sectors, Security guards have been installed in place to ensure a maximum closure watch 24-hour on to the rhinos in the sanctuary to manifest their safety.
More to that, the 70 square kilometres Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is surrounded by a 2 metres electric fence that scares away the intruders from coming as well keeping these species with in the confined territories.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary not only habituates the iconic majestic Uganda southern white Rhinos but it’s also a habitat to atleast 40 mammals, reptiles, bird species amongst others. On your lucky day, some of the wildlife animals can be seen just a step in towards the first entrance gate through the Rwanyanya swamp spotting out Sitatungas, Bushbucks, monkeys where the other wildlife in the sanctuary include hippopotamuses, crocodiles and leopards.
